Jansenism
- From Cornelius Jansenius.
- His book, Augustine, published posthumously, claimed to be no more than a study and exposition of the teachings of that great theologian on the subjects of grace and predestination.
- He found in Augustine was too similar to the doctrines of Calvin.
- However, Jansenism was less a doctrine regarding grace and predestination, and more a movement of zealous religious reform
- This movement was rather a political and intellectual movement closely akin to Gallicanism.
- It disappeared, not because it had been condemned and persecuted, but rather because it had become amorphous.
-
In Frence, The Jansenist torch was taken up by Jean Duvergier, better known as "Saint Cyran"
- Saint- Cyran was sell known as a leading figure in that movement.
-
Cyran became the Champion of Jansenism, and the abbey of Port-Royal its head
quarters.
