Philip Melanchthon

  • Was a German reformer
  • Wrote Loci Theologici which was systematic theology book
  • His systematic exposition of theology became the standard textbook for the study of theology among Lutherans
  • Love peace because of that he maintained relationship with Erasmus
  • Affirmed the doctrine of justification by faith insisted on the need for good works

 

 

Philippists

  • Agreed to "Leipzig Interim"
  • Distinguished central elements of the gospel and peripheral
  • Insisted the essential elementary of the gospel should be kept
  • Never agreed with Luther's assertion about the "enslaved will"
  • Moved to a position that granted the sinful human will greater freedom, and eventually came to speak of a collaboration among the Spirit, the Word, human will
  • Melanchthon's views were akin to Calvin's, the Philippists were in truth Calvinists
